This week was a great experience with the first six brain toys.  The salute has really saved my voice and having to repeat myself multiple times.  The air period is a huge success.  We have even created the air question (draw a question mark and hmm), air exclamation point (draw a ! and make a sizzle sound), the concluder has all ready made a huge difference in my students writing.  I believe that next year is going to be even better.  For example, still seems to be a problem.  The adder is going to take some time.  As Jeff said today, practice makes permanent!  The because slapper is my students favorite because (slap) it give them a chance to be more interactive with their writing.  I say all of my student doing the because slapper while taking their state test. AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!  I am determined to be the best whole brain teacher ever and these are helping to accomplish my goals.

On Monday, I will be starting the next 3 brain toys. (Air blackboard, sockless hand puppets and props)  I am looking forward to giving my students another opportunity to present material to their partners.  I am positive that this will be fun and exciting for my students.  The boys in my class have truly benefited from all of the brain toys thus far.   Check them out at http://www.livestream.com/wholebrainteaching1

starting to show progress

It has been a few days since I had put in the new brain toys.  Check them out at http://www.livestream.com/wholebrainteaching1.....My students are starting to get the hang out it.  The for example is still a big concept, as well as, the adder.  Both of these toys are going to take time.  I have to say that my students really do love the air period and because slapper.  I actually saw some of them doing it while taking their math O.A.A. If you can train your students to do these things, it becomes second nature.  When that starts happening, you start getting results.  The last 3 days I have not had to say give me a complete answer.  That is a big deal to me.  As a teacher, I need my voice!  The less I have to use it, the longer I am going to last.

Brain toys day 2....they are starting to get it

Today was a great day.  After we took our state test, after, we reviewed our brain toys.  All of my students were saying how they wanted to "boop" after they wrote a period on their test.  It was great that all I had to do is salute my students and they knew to answer completely.  My students love the air period.  I believe that the "adder" is our biggest struggle thus far.  This is going to get easier with time!  I think that they are so used to just giving the answer, it is hard for them to explain it.  More updates to come....check out the brain toys......http://www.livestream.com/wholebrainteaching1

4/25/11

Today I introduced the first 6 brain toys to my students. Check them out as the master presents them on live stream http://www.livestream.com/wholebrainteaching1..... Question/Answer, Adder, Concluder, air period, because slapper, and for example.  I would say that it was an experience that I will never forget.  I love the salute because it saves my voice.  Instead of saying "I need a complete sentence/ give me a complete answer" all I have to do is salute.  The concluder is going to catch on rather quickly.  The air period is by far the class favorite.  We even came up with a gesture and sound to go with the air question mark.  We make an air question mark with are right hand and say hmmm after we answer the question. 

I will have to say that this is the hardest thing that I have introduced with whole brain teaching.   This makes me want to continue to work with it.  I feel that this is going to propel my class to the next level in writing.  My students are definably going to have a good time with this as they have fun with all of the whole brain teaching methods. As the Japanese say Gambatte "persevere and don't give up" I will keep you up to date as I review it tomorrow.

p.s. Tomorrow is our state testing for reading.  I know that whole brain teaching has prepared my class for greatness.  Tomorrow we will prove that whole brain is a little crazy and different, but it helps accomplish the ultimate goal of teaching..........to educate!!!!

How many of you wish that you could control some of the things that come out of your students month's?  Well teach-okay is the way for you to do it.  You can find background information for teach-okay at http://wholebrainteaching.com/Whole-Brain-Teching/First-Steps/Whole-Brain-Developer-Teach-OK.html  I know that this is an easy way for me to control what my students are saying.  At first, my students had no idea what to expect.  Most of them were confused why I was allowing them to talk to each other during class.  I knew that I had won them over.

I have taken teach-okay one step farther.  When it is the 1's turn to talk they will stand up and vise versus.  This is allowing me to understand who is doing and saying what they are suppose to.  I have also research that standing up give extra blood flow to the brain.  The brain is what I am trying to shape, so it just made sense.  My students enjoy the moments when they get to teach and love teaching one another.  If I ever see someone off task, I go over and start to repeat the information again.  I have my students repeat the information as many times as they possibly can before they say switch.  I figure the more times they say it, the more likely they are to remember it

Adding your own special touch

I started with the class-yes and my students loved it!  http://www.wholebrainteaching.com/Whole-Brain-Teching/First-Steps/Attention-Getter-Class-Yes.html  However, I needed to add my own special touch to it.  I came up with Yo Yo- What's Up.  When I say Yo Yo my class says what's up.  This is a great way to relate to my students at their level.  Using slang in a good positive way.....try it out!

I am a third grade teacher at Emerson Academy in Dayton, Ohio.  The majority of the student 98% are on free and reduce lunches.  School is the last thing they are thinking about.  I wanted to teach in a way that was different from those in the building.  What did I decide to do....become a whole brain teacher!
